How to root Craig CMP 738a Android Tablet | update image

I know that there is many questions about this Android Tablet. (For all the Canadians out there, you know that Zellers is selling this tablet for $149 in stores). It is a pretty cheap tablet, so don’t expect too much out of it. It is based on the RockChip 2818, and I have created a rooted update image. Please go to the link below for the stock resources:

stock resources link: Craig CMP738a rooted update image

Step-by-Step root update image Craig CMP 738a Android Tablet:

  1. Download the custom ROM here. I’d stay away from the alpha ROM. It works, but getting it on your device takes a few extra steps. The ROM you probably want is this one.
  2. Uncompress the file and rename it update.img
  3. Go into Settings -> USB Mode. Make sure Host Mode is unchecked.
  4. At that point, your computer should recognize it as a drive.
  5. Copy that file to the root directory of the device.
  6. Unplug the device from the USB cable. At this point, it should start the update process.
  7. Once it’s done and rebooted, go into Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications.
  8. Press Menu > Filter > All
  9. Clear Cache for – Checkin Service, Download Manager, Gmail, Google Talk Service and Market
  10. Reboot Device
  11. At that point, you should have a working tablet running Android 2.1, with access to the Android Market.

Here are the Summary of changes from stock:

  • Removed FaceBook
  • Removed Kindle
  • Removed Default Launcher
  • Added Launcher Pro
  • Added SuperUser

>>> To install, save the file to the internal memory as update.img and remove the USB cable; it will prompt you to update.

WARNING:
This will erase all your current data, and as always I am not responsible for bricking your device!

Release 3:

  • Added back cell standby – causing crashes in wireless and network settings
  • Added working market. Only tested with applications that do not require SD card
  • Market Fix if not working:

  2. Select Applications.
  3. Select Manage Applications.
